Series 4, Article 7
What is this Facebook thing?
You can think of Facebook as your personal Bulletin Board. (Be sure to go to “Privacy Settings” and indicate that only people you have labeled as “friends” can see your profile and your wall.) This is where you let all your friends and relatives know what you are up to. You can share photos from your last vacation and your friends can let you know how jealous they are! You can share links to videos or articles that you find interesting too. Treat your “wall” just like you would a bulletin board. Check it for messages from people, ideas and comments about current affairs, photos they post, or even chat with them live while you are online. It can be a great way to keep in contact with friends and family, and even find long lost friends that you haven’t spoken to in years.
Your Online Message Board
Ever want to jot a quick “hi” to someone without having to write a long detailed email or get stuck on the phone for ½ hour? Ever want to let a bunch of friends know what’s going on in your life without having to call or email each one….and without doing the dreaded mass email, which seems so impersonal? Posting updates on your life on Facebook is an easy way to update everyone without making people feel carbon-copied.
Your Online Photo Album
In addition to keeping up with friends and family, Facebook is a great place to upload family photos, vacation photos, party or holiday photos, etc. Rather than having to pull out the photo album when people are over at the house, your friends and family can pull up your Facebook page and see your photos easily.
Facebook for Finding Old Friends
Have you ever wonder whatever happened to the boy next door? Or your best friend from elementary school? With more and more people joining Facebook, it is becoming a great place to look up old friends and getting back in touch. Historically, guys from your past have always been easier to find years later because guys don’t change their last names when they get married. But to find an old girlfriend?……..Impossible! Now with Facebook, most females list their married last name(s) hyphenated with their maiden name, making them easier to find! Of course it will always to more difficult to find a John Smith than a Gertrude Oppenheimer because of the sheer number of matching profiles you will have to look through, but the process is far easier thanks to Facebook.
Facebook PROFILE for Business
You can also use your regular Facebook Profile to connect with co-workers and old co-workers to keep the workplace networking going. It’s a fact that one of the best ways to find a new job is to be recommended by a friend, so keeping up with business contacts can be very important.
Facebook PAGES for Business
Unlike your personal Facebook Profile, which is titled with your first and last name(s), your Facebook Page will be titled with the name of your business. Using your Facebook Profile is a great way to connect with people, but if you want to promote your business, a regular Facebook Profile is not the place to do that. A Facebook Page is a public profile that enables you to share your business and products with Facebook users. When your fans interact with your Facebook Page, stories linking to your Page can go to their friends via News Feed. As these friends interact with your Page, News Feed keeps driving word-of-mouth to a wider circle of friends. What’s great about a Facebook Page is that anyone can see it, “like” it and share it with all their friends, which adds more and more exposure for your business….for free!
